Blog reader:
Patrick Pacalo, of Youngstown, Ohio, has announced the release of his new book Cold Warfare II: Political Terror. The book follows his original work on the topic Cold Warfare: A Compact History. The compact history was intended as a one volume history of the highlights of the Cold War. Cold Warfare II covers terrorism during the Cold War. Two book signings are scheduled for April.

Some of the work was researched in the Government Documents section of Youngstown State University's (YSU) Maag Library. The library has a federal document depository that is rich in history. Pacalo also did research in Washington DC. He also worked out of the National Archives on 27 bankers` boxes of records that the archives made available. In addition, declassified CIA records were used in putting these history books together. His trip to DC coincided with the meeting of the American Cold War Veterans in near-by Arlington. Patrick is a founding member of that organization and was able to take some time out to attend some of the meetings scheduled. One key item the organization supports is the commissioning of a Cold War Service Medal for all who served during that decades’ long conflict.

The newest book covers the landscape of Cold War terrorism, Soviet state directed terrorism, Middle Eastern terrorism, terrorism in Cambodia, Cold War conflict and the IRA, "Red Brigades," asks whether there was a plot on Pope John Paul II's life, covers terrorism by the Weather Underground, and gives conclusions. It gives a better understanding of where we are today in terms of terrorism. The 88 page Cold Warfare II can be read as an individual source.

Patrick is a veteran of the National Guard and Reserves, serving from 1980 to 1994. He served in Infantry, Armor, and Chemical units. He also qualified as a paratrooper and attended a full-time internship at the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) of the US Army War College in 1983. He has a BA in Political Science (IUP), an MA in US with a concentration of course work in Soviet/Russian History (YSU), and a PhD in History (Lacrosse University). Patrick is the son of Captain Nicholas Pacalo, USN (Ret.) and Rose B. Pacalo who is a retired school teacher. Patrick has written over 450 journalistic articles beginning with two editorial columns in the Army Times in 1989. He was named “Author of the Month” by the Boardman Township Trustees in July 2007.

These books will cater to anyone with an interest in the Cold War; students, teachers, and history buffs alike. If you have full World Cat access from a library database you can see that you would be good company with the libraries that purchased the first book (and that the second book is moving along). A few of the prestigious libraries that list with World Cat, and have the first and or second books in the multi-volume series, are listed below:
Auburn University; National Defense University; University of Chicago; University of Kansas; National Archives Library; US Army War College; the Fairfax County Public Libraries; Office of Naval Intelligence; USAF Historical Studies Center in Washington, DC; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Murdoch University, Australia; Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand; and the University of Pretoria, South Africa.

Have a great day and please feel free to contact Pacalo at the info above!
